We fully agree with the basic point being made here, although we disagree with Noakes’s use of the word accept because, from our perspective, what he really is referring to is resignation. In his example, the lower-place finishers resign themselves to the feared predicted outcome and, in doing so, assume that they cannot do anything to affect their present circumstances. Mindfulness allows practitioners to see how they make these future predictions and how they experience an emotional reaction in response to their feared future rather than their true present. They also realize that these reactions interfere with their ability to focus, and they take meaningful action in the present that could contribute to creating a different future than the one they fear. So, a concise answer to the type of question from MSPE participants mentioned previously might be

No, when you notice that you’re not in the lead, you don’t simply resign yourself to a future in which you lose. Instead, you accept the fact that your current experience does not match your desires, let go of the unpleasant thoughts and emotions that arise in reaction to that, and refocus your attention on your actual performance in the moment.
